The Dangers Of Breastfeeding

Disclaimer: Before I get attacked.....I am a big proponent of breastfeeding and would never say or do anything to deter a mother from breastfeeding her child..

As I plan for another hip arthroscopy, I know I am going to be faced with the question "how did you hurt your hip". I have had to explain countless number of times to people that there was actually no injury prior to my other surgeries, which makes me feel like an even bigger ass, at the time, I was 26 and having hip surgery, with no cool and exciting injury. I dreamt of telling people that I had torn my labrum skydiving, or heliskiing, but being that I am a terrible liar, I would have never gotten away with it. Plus, half the time I was explaining that no, I did not have a hip replacement, and no, I am not too young to be having hip surgery, and my all time favorite, no, I could not just live with the pain.

This time, I was thinking of coming up with a cool sounding injury, but again, I don't know how to lie. Plus, all you have to do is look at me, 3 kids, diaper bag, spit up on my shoulder...and you know that my life doesn't get all that exciting. No one would believe me that I had time to actually go skydiving or heliskiing!!! The truth is that I hurt myself while feeding Z, more specifically, breastfeeding Z.

Way back in June, I was sitting on my bed, in Indian style, breastfeeding, as I did hundreds of other times, except this time, When I stood up to put him in his crib, I couldn't put weight on my right leg and my hip HURT. So I have come to the conclusion that I injured myself while breastfeeding!

What sounds better...I didn't really have an injury, or I injured myself while breastfeeding?

My kids didn't like my left boob, so I could only nurse on one side which left me one cup size smaller on one side...so I feel (and my husband would I agree) that I did, indeed injure myself breastfeeding. Not that I would trade it, but hey it is an endurance sport if ever there was one.

Nursing a kid in a sling while you push your toddler in a stroller for example. Or, burning calves while rocking a nursing baby on a 45 minute eating plan. You get the idea:)
Or, shoving spoonfulls of mac & cheese into my mouth before I go nurse the little monster to build up strength...it's kind of like the runners grabbing cups of water from the sidelines and pouring it on their heads.
So, if you told me you hurt yourself nursing, i wouldn't be surpised or offended. And on a serious note, my pain really was worse until I weaned the baby...but again, it was worth every second and I wouldn't trade a minute for those precious moments. You obviously feel the same or wouldn't have done it, haha.

take care,
Vanessa

This will be your 4th scope? I'm trying to look back at your blog to see how old you are. Are you even 30 yet?

My cousin had a hip replacement when she was 32 years old. This was about ten year ago - I think before hip scopes became the new thing. And even though she knows she'll have to go in and have it replaced eventually, she is pain free every single day.

Do you think at this point it might be something to consider? I can't imagine having surgery after surgery and ending up in the same predicament. It makes me nervous to go through with mine.

Any thoughts?

I am not a candidate for a hip replacement given that I don't have arthritis (or at least I don't think I do...TBD). Another issue (well, with resurfacing) is that they are hesitant to put it into a woman of childbearing age bc of the metal on metal issue, I am 29, and yes, sigh, this will be my 4th scope. I did not have 3 failed scopes though, 2 were very successful (the first one ever failed), I have a re-injury now.

Hey, I squeaked three hip scopes under 20 in, odds are good that I'll have 4 by 30 as well.

I have come to the conclusion that I injured my hip while giving birth to my son. He always weighed down on the pelvic bones to where I felt like he was going to just drop out any second. This feeling started when I was 6 months along. At 7 months, I assumed I was having brachston hicks only to find out I was in pre-term labor when the hicks didn't go away after 2 hours. I was put on bed rest and told to take these terrible pills to prevent myself from having any more contractions. The pills gave me awful headaches. I had an epidural when it was finally an acceptable time for my son to enter the world and has he started to gain weight, I started to feel a slight pinch that kept getting worse. When he was 10 month's old, I almost dropped him because the pain was so unbearable. When I went to see my doctor, I was just prescribed with an anti-inflammatory. It didn't really help. But because we didn't have the best insurance, I just didn't push the issue anymore. I tried chiropractic care. I would go in a get re-adjusted every 4 months. After two years, every 4 month had become every 4 weeks. By then I had better insurance and then asked my doctor to refer me to an orthopedic. The orthopedic sent me to physical therapy. After 4 months, I felt better, but I still had that slight pinch that never really went away. Since I'm a public school teacher, I've just been kind of living with it and going to complain about it every June. Then I always get sent to physical therapy for a month. Things get a little better, but the problem still isn't solved. We recently moved from a small town to a big city. I figured resources would be better hear, so I went to see a doctor again this past June. I explained the history with my hip and I was just mad this time because all he did was send me to physical therapy like the last doctor did. When I had to rehash the ordeal to the physical therapist, I mentioned anthroscopy as my desired treatment from what I've researched about it, but learned that insurance companies require doctors to follow certain protocal before they will pay them so doctors have gotten to where they check on it all before they will write a referral to any specialist. I came upon you blog trying to find out what anthroscopy and an MRI would cost wondering if I could afford to just pay for them. Thank you for creating your blog. I have learned what I needed to know and I am comforted knowing that I'm not alone with this pain. I think your pain is worse than mine though. I am able to take sulindac anti-inflamatories and glucosamine supplements to keep my level of pain down to a 3 out of 10. So, I'm still able to walk the dog for about a 1/2 a mile every third day. Sweeping the floor and walking up stairs challenges me though.
