Another "Jeff" Update

My brother is now about 2 1/2 months post-op. He is running, swimming and playing doubles tennis. This is after hip arthroscopy for cam and pincer FAI and a torn labrum (debridement). To add "insult to injury" (bc hey, I was soooo not even close to being this active at 2 1/2 months out) he went skydiving this past Sunday and had no trouble whatsoever! I think he is in the clear to call his surgery a success!!!
On another positive note, J is now 6 months post-op from his surgery and down 96 lbs!!! Here we are celebrating his 29th b-day! Looks like Z is more interested in the cake than anything else!

Thanks for keeping your blog. I am having a hip scope next week and when I Google "torn labrum" surgery I get buried in news about ARod and Mike Lowell!

I am up to Dec. 2007 in your story. Wow...THREE surgeries!!!

I got my Bledsoe Philippon Brace this week and it's too big. I'm v. short. As a PT and someone who's been there, does the size matter? Is the brace a big deal or will I just keep it mostly in the closet?
Thanks,
CJ

CJ, the brace is usually adjusted by the PT in the hospital. The part that goes around your waist is rigid (if my memory serves well) and it can be "molded" to fit you with a little "muscle". It is very adjustbale and only goes down about mid thigh. I never found that it did much to prevent the motion it was supposed to prevent (rotation and flexion gretaer than 90'), but those things also have to be set by the PT (there is a dial on the outside of the brace). It does come in 2 sizes (one for those under 5'4") but I have never heard of anyone having a problem. If you are concerned, you can ask your surgeon to send you for a pre-op PT visit and have it fitted then.

Thanks, Susie! I will contact my doctor's office. They gave me the brace for 5'4 and over and I'm 4'11".

It's going to take welding tools to make this one fit!

The brace guy at my surgeon's office fitted the brace last week, that's why I'm concerned. He already set the dial and put different velcro on the leg part because I couldn't reach it at first. Still, the "waist" band must sit right at my bra line to get the leg bands to fit on my thigh (as opposed to my knee or below). And when I walk, the thing slides down b/c my hip bones don't stop it as they would if it were at my waist.

Okay, that's way more than you wanted to know about it all!

Thanks again,
CJ

soccermom, please don't hate me. Do you hate me for being so functional or for skydiving? I still do feel some pain in my knees and legs but the more work i do, the better it gets. I'm guessing it's cause the muscles havent been used in such strenuous ways for nearly 3 months. As for the brace, i felt it was pretty unnecesary and didn't do much for me except hinder my crutch movement on the side that i had it on. You kind of have to swing it around the brace. Good luck on your surgery and no need to hate.

I had my surgery! I was so thankful for your blog, Susie, because nothing was a surprise. I had a torn labrum and had to have something shaved down and something cleaned up. I recall the word femur and the word synovial and swelling. I'll get more details at my follow-up when I'm less drugged.

I'm not in much pain but I'm taking ALL the meds.

The brace was too big and the doc said it was more of a reminder not to move a certain way, but when you're as short as I am and things are too big, they just feel wrong, and I felt like I was dragging around something I should fit into, but the thing was hanging, felt heavy, like I was lugging it, etc. After a few minutes on the bike in PT, I couldn't pedal because the metal part was digging into the back of my knee somehow. They didn't have the short brace, but the brace guy cut down another type of brace that is for other hip problems. It fits so I don't feel so "wrong."

In all, I'm doing well. I might have stopped at the mall on the way home.
