Let's Try This Again

Quick Update: I woke up today and had a serious debate with myself about taking one crutch with me to walk L to school, I hurt from the last 2 days of crutchless walking. I ended up leaving it at home and did great. As I walked, the muscles warmed up and became less achey.
On a side note- my butt hurts, like if I sit only on my right butt cheek (not that I do this often, but think of sitting/ lying in bed), also my greater trochanter is still painfu, so I am still betting on the trochanteric brsitis.

I had to go to CVS today. The pharmacy called yesterday to inform me that my Percocet which was picked up on 11/13 was never paid for (the copay). Seriously? Its been 3 weeks and you just noticed? And how the heck did you allow a controlled substance to leave without being paid for? Anyway...they had pink canes!! Had I known last week, I would have splurged on one!!

Ok, what are we trying again. I am calling on all of my readers to please post in the comments section what your symptoms of FAI/labral tear are/were. If you are a frequent poster, infrequent poster, lurker or first time reader, please comment. I want to create a list to help other people, as I was never able to come across a 'good' list. I tried this once before and it didn't really work out, let's make it work this time.

Clicking, catching (especially when changing direction when walking or getting in and out of car), deep aching. Now post op (scope with labral debridement of fibrillated labral tear) and still have aching (especially with sitting for long periods), nerve pain in thigh and butt, episodes of the hip giving way (though less frequent now). Pain is better with rest and worse with increased activity. Am now six months post op. Wish I had just broke it lol

I can't believe no one is replying Jess, its just me and you! Here's mine: Here were my pre-op symptoms: Groin pain, deep deep groin pain, not always excruciating, but so annoying I felt like cutting off my leg, tight hip flexors, pain with sitting, pain with walking uphill, pain with pushing my stroller. I did not have radiating pain down my legs, all the hip pain was anterior medial.

Jess, I have been getting a lot of hits off of your blog!!!

I know! I keep looking back at this post to see who's commented and there's nothing!
That's interesting you're getting lots of hits off my blog, I only put the link up there a couple of days ago lol glad it's helped :-)

My symptoms started with groin pain, which seemed both deep and also superficial, and sometimes radiated up to my lower right pelvic/abdominal area. After awhile, I developed pain over my greater trochanter and in my piriformis muscle. Before my first scope I had SI joint discomfort as well, and also IT band tightness and soreness down my thigh to my knee. At first my pain was intermittent, but over time it became constant; it would get better or worse, but there was always a baseline amount of pain. Driving was horrible. Groin pain was always the worst symptom. Yuck!

I'm new to this forum but share many of your issues. I had a right hip arthroscopy with debridement on 1/16/08. The doc indicated the labral tear was larger than expected based on the MRI and another cartilage tear was detected and repaired during the procedure.

While my hip is still sore, I have not experienced any of the clicking/popping that occurred pre-op. My problem and concern is that the pre-op pain across my lower back and especially left si joint has not gone away. It is triggered by sitting, stairs or steep inclines. Bed rest appears to provide the only relief. This has been going on for over two years and I was extremely hopefully that the arthroscopy would address all of the pain, especially while sitting. Perhaps my pelvis is so out of whack based on the labral tear and will only be relieved through PT and time.

It sounds like some of you have experienced similar issues and I would welcome any suggestions. I think the hip will eventually recover but I am really struggling to define why I experience pain while sitting. Is it related to the hip or something else?

TSE-
At this point, you are stll very early in your recovery, reading back on the post you commented on, I didn't even remember that I has those types of issues at 3 weeks out, but there are so many muscular issues that rear their ugly head in the early post-op period.
SI issues WILL NOT be addressed with a scope. But can be quite easily addressed with a good PT.Are you seeing someone? I would def. have then check it out and see if you are having SI dysfunctions and if they can correct it.
Now, at 3 months, I am having some SI issues but PT is doing a good job!
Welcome to the blog! Enjoy!

Susie,

What is the source of the muscular issues? Is it the surgery or my body readjusting due to the increased mobility? Either way, the SI problems bother me more than my hip and hopefully will diminish once the hip heals. Sitting is still the biggest issue and is actually worse than it was pre-op. My PT is pretty good but progress is slow, or at least it seems slow after 3 weeks.

KSE-
there are sooooo many reasons why the SI may act up. Sometimes, in women, it is hormonal. Obviously, this is not I would suspect in someone who is post-op. I know for me, I was having a lot of psoas tightness which was affecting my SI joint at one point (I dont even remember which leg or which surgery anymore). More recently (check some posts from last week), my SI was acting up again, I am not sure why. It may be a change in OCP in my case, or hip related too, or a combination of both. My hip flexors get tight when I spin, so this may be the culprit too. My SI is better this week since I have not been able to spin bc I have a really bad cold/ sinus infection/ flu thing going on.
Could your piriformis be tight as well?

Susie,

Hi. Really appreciate your feedback. From your description, it sounds like your SI pain is somewhat intermittent. My pain pattern is very consistent and very predictable. As such, I thought it would be fairly straightforward to diagnose and correct. Unfortunately, that clearly hasn't been the case.

I know I had a hip labral tear(s) and I got it fixed. Still, as I referenced in an earlier post, my pre-op symptoms are still around post-op ---- sitting enduces si pain (and probably had more hip pain pre-op), prolonged sitting really stinks, walking provides some relief and bed rest provides the most relief. My operation was on my right hip but the SI pain is on the left.

I'm hitting the PT hard but not much change. What would you recommend as a next course? I live in So Cal so there are plenty of resources but knowing where to go and what to ask is the challenge.

Thanks again for your help.

You need someone to check out the alignment of your SI. If there is a dysfunction, it is usually not difficult to correct. Your PT should be able to do this for you, and give you an opinion on what the problem is and where it is stemming from. This is not uncommon.
