11 Month Update

I am now 11 months post hip arthroscopy #2, the first and only surgery on the left hip. On most days, I would never think I had surgery on that leg. What effects me the most these days is that it is pool season and I am not thrilled with the vampire bite scars on my leg. I know last week there was the slight medial issue, I have not had it since, and I can say I am thrilled thrilled thrilled with it. I have no idea what the ROM is, or what the strength is, functionally, it is amazing and that is all that matters.I don't care if I am lacking some IR, or some flexion, there is nothing in life I currently cannot do bc of this hip.

I would love to x-ray my hips, and see what they look like now, see if arthritis is beginning to set in, what the shape is like....I have not had post-op x-rays, the closest I have come is an OR x-ray on the right side to show the "funky cam impingement" before and after! X-rays will have to wait!
All I can say is thank you Dr. Kelly!!!!

One Year Anniversary

Today marks exactly 1 year from my first ever hip arthroscopy. This was supposed to be the ONLY surgery but as luck would have it, it opened the flood gates and resulted in 2 more surgeries, bringing me to a whopping 3 hip arthroscopies in only 8 months. Its like winning the lottery! hahaha!

1 year ago today, at this time, I was most likely downing a Vicodin and in a ton of pain. I actually remember very well that I decided (stupidly) to sleep through the night and went 8 hours with NO pain meds. When I woke up in the morning, I lunged for the bottle and took 2. That began the vomiting with hipscope #1. I learned after that and never went more than 4-6 hours without drugs. I even went to to PT the next morning (absolutely barbaric) and lunch, but that was where the fun ended. It was back to praying to the porcelain god for me!!

I ended up getting Compazine (pretty light weight for me) and Ultram because my pain was so bad, I stayed on the Ultram for 2 weeks. I was in a lot of pain after the first scope. I imagine that it was due to the f---ing impingement remaining in my hip. I noticed a huge difference immediately following scope #2, even from day 1. Its a shame that my left hip didn't become painful first. It would have saved me a lot of time, pain and a hell of a lot of aggravation.

One year later, the results speak for themselves. Yes, there were a few extra (not so) minor bumps in the road, but the important thing is the end result, and my hips rock (for the most part)!

Too bad I didn't begin my blog 1 year ago, but like I have said, I didn't think there would be anything to blog about!

Ride On!

The weather was beautiful today so I piled the kids into the double stroller and went to the park. For those of you who do not remember, pushing the double stroller was what eventually landed me in Dr Kelly's OR 3 times.

Just to recap, I drive this:
And I push

and

This is one of the first times since my revision scope that I remember pushing the double stroller all the way to the park, so it felt like an accomplishment, plus, I like having the experience and knowing that I can do it. My right hip felt weak while pushing. Then again, I am pushing 35lbs of stroller and about 70lbs of kids. I also had discomfort in my trouble spot. The area along the front of my thigh along all of the scope sites, where I have supposed nerve damage. It didn't hurt but I could feel that it was an area that was not done healing.

As for my arm, the tingling has diminished.I have decided to see my acupuncturist this week, I will let you know what happens. The good news is that I don't think it is too serious and the tingling has centralized to my elbow. The bad thing is that my elbow hurts now. I think it may be the way I am doing a manipulation at work so I will have to be careful.

In an unrelated story, have you been following Carlos Delgado's story, from the NY Mets? He was flown from Florida to NY to have an MRI at HSS, the findings were that it is not serious, it is just an impingement in his hip.

WTF???? Not serious? How many of you have been sidelined bc of a simple "hip impingement"?

Why Do I Open My Big Fat Mouth???

Just when I thought things were peachy, reality hit once again. Lets regroup and look at the big picture, if hip arthroscopy is supposed to have a full recovery time of 6-12 months, why I am bragging at 3 that I'm perfect. Someone please say "shut up Susie", you know you imagined those 12 seconds of painfree bliss, there is NO FRIGGIN WAY you are done with your grizzling (thanks Jess, I've been waiting for a good opportunity to use your word). So, if it makes everyone happy again, I had a wild dose of reality yesterday.

Normally, I work a 5 hour day, at which point I am beat, exhausted, and ready for cup of coffee #4 (or 5). My office is a bit understaffed this week because of vacation time as well as people at continuing education courses (see, its not just me who is a huge dork), so I volunteered to work 11 hours yesterday. 8 hours in, my legs both hurt so much, I was soooo sore, my piriformis threatened to go into spasm, my adductors tightened up again as did sartorius. Truthfully, I think many of my colleagues felt the same way at the 8 and 9 hour mark, it is an exhausting day. I can't wait to revert back to part time status!

6 Week Update

I can't believe it has been 6 weeks since my revision surgery. I see that there are a lot of new readers, so welcome, I hope you are enjoying this pathetic rendition of what my life has become!!! J/K!! I am actually really happy!

Just to recap- I had a revision hip arthroscopy on November 12, 2007 after my original scope on 3/5/07 failed secondary to residual FAI (femoroacetabular impingement). I originally had a labral tear and cam and pincer FAI, the initial surgery did not address the cam FAI (long story). In the long run, I am very happy my surgeon was not overly aggressive because you can always go back in and take down more bone, but you can never put it back!

So, 3 hip arthroscopies later, I can say that it was all worth it because I am in a much better place.

Just yesterday, we went to the NY Botanical Gardens holiday train show, it was our 3rd year going, I guess it is a tradition now! I have vivid memories of going last year. My hip hurt so much, and this was before I had been 'officially' diagnosed. I was so anxious at the time, as well as frustrated that the simple task of pushing my stroller hurt. Yesterday was a pleasure, for my hip anyway. We waited in line for over 40 minutes just to get in, and then the entire show was done in 'line form'. The kids loved it, and we had a blast. I never once thought about my hip!

I cannot remember if I have joint pain. Clearly, it is not an issue. What is still an issue is the 'invisible bruise' on my thigh. It still bothers me at work, when leaning with that leg against a treatment table. I have learned to fold a towel in between me and the table to help add more cushioning and protection there. The scope sites have been neglected this time so are tender to the touch, they are in the vicinity of the 'invisible bruise', so the entire area is tender to the touch, still.

My numbness is still there, and most recently has began to burn. It is not constant, and has only happened a few times, but is quite irritating. The alternative would be to try a heavy duty med called Lyrica, but the side effects are pretty intense, so I can only imagine what that would do to me, so no thank you! Hopefully it will not get worse than this.

My pain in the ass is better, but my piriformis is still in spasm, not as bad as last week though, phew. I had PT today and had P work on the scars and 'invisible bruise' and stretch my psoas, which is tight (but not so tight it needs to be released!!!)

I am supposed to go back to Spinnning today/ this week as per my own goal but I have a pretty bad sinus headache/ infection so it will have to wait a few days until it clears! Tomorrow is a new day though!!!!!

My left side is almost 6 months out, doing great, with just some pretty noisy popping/ snapping. The noisiness is painfree so I am not in the least bit concerned.

3 month Update

It has been 3 months since my second hipscope, wow, time flies when you're having fun! The left hip is doing great, fabulous, awesome!!!! I am thrilled with the results. I have minimal groin pain when doing a lot of walking, and the only other time I really experience any pain is when doing plie's at work, still getting adductor pain on the way up. I think I can live with that!

P took measurements for me today, here are my ROM and strength test results:
ROM:
Right hip flexion: 110' with pain, 112' with severe pain
Left Hip flexion: 120'
External Rotation: R: 42' L: 35'
Internal Rotation: R: 36' L: 38'

Strength:
Seated Hip Flexion: R: 4+/5 L: 4+/5
Prone Hip Extension: R: 4/5 L: 4-/5
Sidelying Hip Abduction: R: 4/5 L:4/5
Seated Hip External Rotation: R: 4/5 L: 4-/5
Seated Hip Internal Rotation: R: 4/5 L: 4/5
Supine Straight Leg Raise: R: 3+/5 L: 3+/5

My PT exercises have not changed since the last time I listed them, I have added a new exercise, I do not have a name for it, I'm sure P does. I will describe it. I stand on the left leg, P places a cone directly in front of me, one to my right, and one behind and slightly to the left. The objective is to touch each cone with my foot, they are placed so I must reach for them, and the one behind me requires rotation and extension, very challenging. I am supposed to add sidelying straight leg raise in adduction but I keep forgetting!

My hope is that once my right leg is 'taken care of', it will do as well as the left! As it stands right now, I think the ROM is as good as it will be, but the strength can improve a bit!!

The 5 Stages of Grief

I thought I was in 'anger' over this whole possible 'revision' business. I have been so pissed off, moody, and down right sad. But I think I may have reverted to denial yesterday at the Burberry sample sale. Take a look at what I bought.

Will I ever be able to wear them???

(if so, what do they go with???)
